As a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle ‘Challenger’ in 1983, Guion S. Bluford became the first African American to travel into space. He was also a highly decorated Air Force pilot in Vietnam, flew a total of 3 space missions, has been inducted into both the International Space Hall of Fame, and the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame!
